History and Science
Giessen is a university city in Hesse, located along the Lahn river not far to the north of Frankfurt (Main).
It currently has 76,000 citizens, many of whom are students. The two universities significantly shape life in the city that was founded during the Middle Ages.
Situated at an important traffic hub for Hesse, it is well-connected to financial metropolis Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main Area.
INDUSTRIES AND SECTORS
Life science | healthcare
Given the impact of its universities on Gießen, best expressed by the fact that over 30,000 students study there, it comes as no surprise that two of the city’s key industries are the biotech and life-science sectors.
With Lilly Germany, for example, the city hosts one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the world. Thanks to networking initiatives such as KNUT or Transmit, the city’s life science, medical, and bio-tech companies are able to cooperate with the local universities and the university hospital, one of the largest of its kind in Germany.
Another key industry in Gießen is the (electronic) engineering sector, best represented by the companies Heiligenstaedt, Werth Messtechnik, and the globally active Mettler Toledo.

INSTITUTES OF HIGHER EDUCATION
Justus Liebig University Giessen
The Justus Liebig Universität, with its long tradition, is the city’s main pride. It offers a wide range of studies as well as many interdisciplinary centers that contribute significantly to the university’s research profile. It is highly regarded for its life and medical sciences as well as its center of cultural studies.
With 14,000 students, Gießen’s second institute of higher education, the Technische Hochschule of Mittelhessen, is the largest of its kind in the state. A University of Applied Sciences, it specializes in mathematics, IT, engineering, and business, thus contributing to the excellent science record of Gießen.
Free Time in Giessen
One of the city’s highlights is the Mathematikum, an interactive museum of mathematics that testifies to the great role that the university and its science programs have and continue to play in Gießen.
The Stadttheater Gießen is another highlight not to be missed, offering a great variety of dramatic and musical performances. In addition, the Kunsthalle Gießen hosts changing exhibitions of international contemporary art.
leisure and recreation
The calm Lahn riverside lends itself perfectly for biking tours, jogging, or Inline-Skating, while the river itself is regularly frequented by canoeists.
The Schwanenteich is a beautiful small lake close to the meadows along the Lahn. Of course, being a university town, Gießen also offers not a few places to enjoy a drink or good dinner.
