Founded in 1457, the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg is one of Germany's oldest universities. It offers a wide diversity of undergraduate and graduate studies in all important disciplines. The University has three large campuses, one in the historical center of Freiburg, the "institute quarter" which is home to the science faculties and the engineering campus which together with the University Medical Center lies to the north-west of the city center.

Freiburg's two strongest economic sectors include healthcare and tourism. The healthcare sector is the largest employer in the city. The cluster initiative HealthRegion Freiburg brings these two fields together to strengthen medical and health tourism in the region.

The network cluster Health Region is an initiative to combine medical tourism, the health care system and e-health. This project is supported by about 30 companies and institutions in both healthcare and tourism.

The medical facilities offer a range of services, including for example therapy with integrated rehabilitation programs and prevention programs, both for private individuals and for companies.The network also takes advantage of Freiburg's proximity to the Black Forest with its number of options for leisure activities.

The BioRegio is a partner of the cluster initiative BioValley, a network which aims to support biotechnology in the Freiburg region. The project BioValley brings together regions in Germany, France and Switzerland to develop new projects in Life Sciences. It has one of Europe's highest concentrations of researchers and medical industry with a workforce of over 50,000 qualified employees.

Freiburg offers a large number of recreational areas and parks for leisure activities. The largest park is the Dietenbachpark located next to the Dietenbach lake. The park offers many sports facilities, playgrounds and barbecuing areas.

The Keidel Mineral Thermal Bath offers visitors a wide range of wellness programs, as well as 1,800 square meters of water surface from relaxing whirlpools to the fun pool with water jets. It also contains the largest sauna facilities in South Baden and a therapy center with several therapeutic treatment options.

Due to its close proximity to the Black Forest, Freiburg is also a popular skiing destination.

CULTURE

One of Freiburg's most famous sights are the historic city center and the Freiburg Minster, Germany's only Gothic church tower completed in the Middle Ages.

Freiburg is also renowned for its Bächle, small water filled runnels that can be found along most streets the old city center. The Schlossberg hill provides an extensive view over the city and can be reached by the Schlossbergbahn funicular railway.

Freiburg is also home to a large number of theaters and orchestras, such as the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, one of Germany's best orchestras. Other places of interest are the Augustiner Museum with its extensive visual art and sculpture collection.
