The polycentric Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region is Germany's largest metropolitan area with over 11 million inhabitants. Historically, North Rhine-Westphalia has been the center of Germany's steel and coal industries and even today the state remains one of Germany's industrial centers. The city of Cologne is known for its famous cathedral, Germany's most visited landmark.
